SHIATSU MASSAGE THERAPY

Shiatsu is a physical therapy that supports and strengthens the body’s natural ability to heal and balance itself. It works on the whole person - not just with the physical body, but also with the psychological, emotional and spiritual aspects of being. Jasmine is our NEW resident Shiatsu therapist.

Shiatsu originated in Japan from traditional Chinese medicine, with influences from more recent Western therapies. Although shiatsu means ‘finger pressure’ in Japanese, in practice a practitioner uses touch, comfortable pressure and manipulative techniques to adjust the body’s physical structure and balance its energy flow. It is a deeply relaxing experience and regular treatments can alleviate stress and illness and maintain health and well-being.

TREATMENT

A treatment usually lasts one hour. The person who is treated rests on a futon laid on the floor, fully clothed. Each treatment begins with a couple of questions about the client’s general physical and emotional state of health. The practitioner then uses the Hara diagnosis (palpitation of the abdomen) to determine the focus of the treatment. The shiatsu practitioner releases areas of tension, tonifies meridians and stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which allows the body to relax deeply and encourages its own healing systems.

By using the thumbs, palms, elbows and knees, the practitioner applies gentle pressure on relevant meridians and acupressure points. Gentle stretches and joint manipulation are used to encourage the flow of energy and to release blockages. Immediately after the treatment, clients usually say that they feel rested, lighter and calmer, but also energised.

Shiatsu therapy can be highly beneficial for a wide range of physical and mental conditions. For example:
Stress: exhaustion, anxiety, depression, migraine
Muscles and joints: stiffness, tension, pain
Digestive: indigestion, constipation, bloating
Respiratory: tight chest, asthma, shallow breathing
Gynaecological: menstrual problems, menopause
